Integrating Human & Organisational Performance training and Learning from Normal Work (LFNW)

Over the past year, we’ve helped a Global Service company achieve remarkable results from integrating Human and Organisational Performance into everyday operations. The initiative set out with three clear goals: improve quality, strengthen process safety, and create a way to “learn from normal work.”

To achieve this, six core Human Factors competencies were introduced across the entire organisation—from workshop teams to leadership in the boardroom. Six in-house HF champions were developed to embed these practices, supported by a tool that tracks 12 performance-influencing factors. This process not only identifies gaps that could impact safety and performance, but also highlights best practices worth repeating.

The results speak for themselves. Across 47 operations in seven months, teams delivered:

Zero incidents
Zero non-productive time
100% quality scores from customer feedback

Just as importantly, Human Performance coaching helped crews grow their confidence in speaking up and addressing ambiguity. This led to a new process—positive interventions—as part of the Stop Work Authority, further strengthening the culture of safety. Human Factor tools have even been applied in enhanced well control practices for slickline operations, showing the breadth of their value.

This work marks a milestone: the first time that Learning from Normal Work has been combined with Crew Resource Management in a comprehensive program. Delivered at workshops, offices, and both onshore and offshore wellsites, the program has proven that Human & Organisational Performance principles belong at every level of an organisation and throughout the well construction, intervention, and process safety spheres.

By learning not just from incidents, but from everyday work, teams are building stronger, safer, and more resilient futures.
